BLOOMINGTON - Police on Thursday were still looking for a suspect who robbed an east-side bank shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday in Bloomington. Officers were called to the National City bank branch at 1332 E. Empire St. at 4:55 p.m., minutes before the bank lobby was scheduled to close at 5 p.m.
Police were searching for a suspect described as a white male, about 40 to 50 years old, about 5-foot-10, wearing a dark blue, hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and carrying a red backpack. The combination of the hood and a black mask concealed most of the robber's face in security footage now being examined by police, said police spokesman Duane Moss.
There were no arrests as of Thursday morning, police said.
The suspect, who was armed with a handgun, fled the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Bloomington police Sgt. Kenneth Bays said officers have not ruled out the possibility that a car was parked nearby.
A K-9 officer arrived on the scene shortly after the robbery was reported but was there only as a responding officer. Bays said the dog could not be used to track the suspect in the cold, snowy weather Wednesday night.
For more than an hour after the robbery was reported, officers were seen searching the parking lot with flashlights and canvassing the neighborhood.
