100 years ago
Aug. 26, 1908: Board of Supervisors member William C. Jones, 63, died at his Arrowsmith home. He was a major force in building the new court house after the 1900 fire. (The building today is the McLean County Museum of History.)
75 years ago
Aug. 26, 1933: Normal is getting a new industry. The Fuqua Engineering Company is setting up an assembly plant at 113-115 East Beaufort. The firm makes equipment for dry cleaning and steam heating. About 25 men will work there.
50 years ago
Aug. 26, 1958: Jerry Lane, 15, Bloomington, died of injuries suffered in a motorbike wreck. The driver of the other bike, also 15, was not hurt. (14 and 15-year old motorbike riders were exempt from the drivers' license statute. This tragedy was a factor in the law being changed.)
25 years ago
Aug. 26, 1983: Well-known Bloomington policeman Marvin Thomas, 50, died of a heart attack. He was seen as a "go-to" guy for Mayor Buchanan and Chief Miller. Sergeant Thomas was a 26-year veteran of the force. His death leaves friends and fellow officers in shock.
