BLOOMINGTON - An autopsy performed Saturday revealed a rural Bloomington man who fell into a hole partially filled with water died as a result of drowning, McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said in a statement.
Gary Savage, 64, died Thursday after collapsing while digging a hole in the backyard of his Charterwood subdivision home. He was attempting to fix a leaking sump pump, authorities said.
McLean County Police Lt. Carl Boyd said Savage fell headfirst into the hole, which was about 3 feet wide and 2 to 3 feet deep.
Savage's wife found him and attempted to pull him out, Boyd said. LeRoy and Downs rescue crews and a sheriff's deputy pulled him out of the hole, but he was not breathing. Savage was transported to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m. Thursday.
Forensic toxicology tests will be performed, and those results should be available in four to six weeks, Kimmerling said in Saturday's statement.
Kimmerling's office continues to investigate what led to Savage's collapse, the statement said.
