100 years ago
March 8, 1908: In Holder, the telephone switchboard will be moved from Dan Leary's to Harry Smith's place. There will be 50 to 60 phones used on the line going to the switchboard at the Smith place.
75 years ago
March 8, 1933: Gridley undertaker and furniture dealer Philip Froehlich, 76, died after a long illness. He had been in Gridley 11 years, after operating a similar business in Roanoke. (The Froehlich name survives on funeral homes in Gridley, El Paso, Flanagan, Minonk and Toluca).
50 years ago
March 8, 1958: A plan to add 30 low-rent units for elderly tenants drew fire from apartment owners. They questioned the need, claiming they have trouble keeping their apartments in tenants. They said "hundreds" of apartments are available in town right now.
25 years ago
March 8, 1983: Searchers have never found William Godfrey, 30, and will resume searching today. He was swept away in flood waters in December at University Street and Virginia Ave. in Normal. Fearing the worst, recovery workers will be dragging two gravel pits today.
