100 years ago
Aug. 22, 1908: The lighter side of politics and circuses circulated here this week. Riddle: what's the difference between Bryan (a Democrat) running for President and the Ringling Brothers? Answer: one has a show. (Bloomington was a Republican stronghold, even then.)
75 years ago
Aug. 22, 1933: Governor Horner named a former Bloomington man to his cabinet last week. Archie Bowen, who worked at newspapers in Bloomington and Springfield, will be Director of Public Welfare. He has been working in state government for about four years.
50 years ago
Aug. 22, 1958: It will cost $500,000 more to finish the new BHS building on East Locust Street. So the school board is asking voters to approve the additional funding. The target date for completion is the opening of classes in September, 1959.
25 years ago
Aug. 22, 1983: After 36 years the comic strip Priscilla's Pop is done, dropped by the distributor. The strip follows the Nutchell family, Priscilla's friend Hollyhock, and the Bottses (neighbors). Mom would pack mashed potato sandwiches for Pop to take to work for lunch.
