NORMAL - Two dozen windows were smashed on construction equipment and a fire set under the fuel tank of a semitrailer truck in vandalism sprees at Big Hook Crane Service, 1400 Fort Jesse Road.
"It's disheartening. This is very malicious," said John Weaver, company president, who said times were hard enough already for a small business. He's beefed up security at additional cost.
Damage done to three cranes and a semi March 9 or 10 included broken windows, lights and mirrors, said police.
On Sunday night, two cranes and two semitrailer trucks were damaged. In that incident, security cameras recorded images of two boys causing damage, and Normal police released the footage Thursday.
One wore a two-tone jacket with a hood and blue jeans. The second suspect wore a tan jacket, black stocking hat, and jeans. Both wore athletic shoes.
"They broke out probably 24 windows," said Weaver of the overall damage. "This was not just throwing a rock and cracking a window. They just beat (some of) them out of the frames."
Vandals also tried to set a semi on fire. They lighted fuel cans on fire "dangerously close" to a fuel tank, said Normal Police Sgt. Dan Kelley.
Weaver said the business was able to do jobs it had because equipment being used was not damaged.
While initial damage total is $6,000, Weaver is unsure of the total because additional damage may be found when equipment is used.
