BLOOMINGTON - A 19-year-old woman jumped off a second-floor balcony of her apartment building to escape a man who allegedly broke into her apartment and tried to rape her, police said Thursday.
Arthur W. Gilbert, 23, is due in court later this month on charges alleging he broke into the apartment in the Arbors at Eastland complex around 6 a.m. June 13 when the 19-year-old resident was home alone.
The woman told police she was asleep when she heard noises she first thought was her roommate, said police spokesman Duane Moss. She then saw and physically struggled with a man who had a comforter over his head before going to a second-floor balcony and jumping to safety, Moss said. Someone then called 911 from a first-floor unit in the building in the 2400 block of East Washington Street, he said.
The woman, who was allegedly pushed against a wall by Gilbert during the break-in, had some minor injuries to her knees, arms and neck, Moss said. Police reports don't indicate that she was transported to a hospital, he said.
Gilbert was arrested July 9 in Normal on three outstanding warrants in an effort led by a U.S. Marshal's Service fugitive task force, Moss said. Gilbert, who was also wanted on separate gun charges and profiled by Crime Stoppers in May, had been out on parole since August 2006 after pleading guilty to drug charges earlier that year.
He was transferred back into the Illinois Department of Corrections on Tuesday due to a parole violation, likely triggered by his recent arrest, IDOC spokeswoman Januari Smith said.
Gilbert has been transferred back to Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Smith said.
He is set for arraignment in McLean County on July 25 on multiple charges, including home invasion, residential burglary and attempted criminal sexual assault in connection with the June 13 break-in, court records said.
