PONTIAC -- More than a ton of marijuana, with a street value estimated at $10 million, was found early Monday morning in a truck on Interstate 55 near the twin Cities, state police said.
The driver, a 50-year-old Arizona man, was in custody Monday in Peoria County jail awaiting formal charges, said Lt. Fred Winterroth Illinois State Police District 6, which is based in Pontiac. He was in Peoria County because authorities expect him to be charged today in federal court there.
The semitrailer truck was northbound just north of Normal when it was stopped about 12:30 a.m. for a routine motor carrier safety inspection, Winterroth said.
There were two people in the truck, both from Arizona, but Winterroth said police were trying to determine where they came from and where they were going with the marijuana. The driver owns the truck, Winterroth said.
A passenger, a 50-year-old Arizona woman, was not arrested, Winterroth said.
Inconsistencies that came up during the stop aroused the suspicions of the officers, prompting them to search the truck, Winterroth said. The officers declined to say what the inconsistencies were.
Police found more than 100 boxes wrapped in green plastic wrap among a load of paper products. The bundles contained an estimated 2,000 to 2,600 pounds of marijuana, but an official weight had not been determined Monday.
Although the truck was stopped just north of Normal, the marijuana was transferred to Pontiac for further investigation, Winterroth said.
Winterroth said he did not know how big this drug seizure was compared to others in the past, but he noted any interstate connecting large metropolitan areas will see a lot of drug trafficking.
This may be the largest marijuana seizure on Interstate 55 in Central Illinois in a decade, according to a review of Pantagraph records.
