BLOOMINGTON -- Military personnel past and present will be recognized at several Twin City businesses on Veterans Day, with special ceremonies, shopping discounts and free meals.

Here's a quick look at some of the offers and events planned for Wednesday, unless otherwise noted:

Free food

Applebee's Neighborhood Bar and Grill, 502 N. Veterans Parkway, Bloomington. Offering a free entree from a special six-option menu Wednesday. Must show valid veteran or active-duty identification.

Bob Evans, 801 IAA Drive and 2115 W. Market St., both in Bloomington. Free meal being offered (up to $6 value). Show military ID or discharged papers at the cash register. "This is just a small token of our gratitude toward our community heroes here in Bloomington ... " Justin Thies, Bob Evans area coach in the Illinois market, said in a statement.

Outback Steakhouse, 1409 N. Veterans Parkway, Bloomington. Free Bloomin' Onion appetizer and beverage. Just show proof of military service.

Krispy Kreme, 201 N. Veterans Parkway, Bloomington. Free donut for veterans and active-duty personnel.

Retail discounts

Lowe's home improvement store, 2101 E. Empire St., Bloomington. Ten percent discount to military personnel (current and veterans) through Nov. 18.

Home Depot, 795 Veterans Parkway, Normal. Ten percent military discount, with maximum discount of $200. Discount effective Nov. 5 through Wednesday.

Special events

State Farm Insurance Cos. Corporate South Headquarters, Bloomington: Annual Veterans Day Recognition Breakfast (7:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, private event) to honor more than 600 employees and women who have served or are currently serving in the military. State Farm is also donating $1 to Fisher House Foundation for each "thank you" sent to friends, family or members of the military via www.ThanksforBeingThere.com.

Country Financial Customer Services Building, 1711 GE Road, Bloomington: Veterans Day ceremony, 10 a.m. Wednesday, private event. Employees can pay tribute to veterans, including Country employee and Illinois Army National Guard Spc. Elizabeth Fozard, who recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan. Also, employees can try on body armor and tour an Army Humvee afterward.
