BLOOMINGTON -- It is unlikely that the driver of a semi-truck that killed a 10-year-old cyclist July 2 saw the child before the collision, according to testimony Thursday at a coroner's inquest.

Travell Arrington of the 1700 block of Illinois Street had put air in his bike tires at Pilot Travel Center on West Market Street before heading home, said Bloomington police Sgt. Greg Scott.

The inquest panel ruled the child's death accidental.

Sergey Ivasyuk of Elmwood Park was making a wide turn into the truck stop from Brown Street when his 80,000-pound truck collided with the bike, Scott testified.

"At some point, he felt or heard a bump," Scott said the driver told police.

Ivasyuk was looking behind him, checking the position of his trailer, when the accident occurred, according to police.

The child's bike struck the front of the semi and was pinned under the vehicle when emergency personnel arrived. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said the accident occurred in the Pilot parking lot and not on the sidewalk, as initially suspected.

A witness told police the child appeared to be speeding up in an effort to beat the truck's entrance to the parking lot, said Scott.

"He didn't believe there was any way for the driver to see him or stop," Scott said of the witness's recollection.

Kimmerling said family members reported that Travell frequently rode his bike to the truck stop and was familiar with the area. The coroner conceded that the busy truck stop probably was not the safest place to fill bike tires.

No citations were issued to the driver. An inspection of the truck indicated one brake that needed adjustment but Scott could not say if that was a factor in the accident.

"I just think it was a tragic set of circumstances that seemed to come together at the same time," Scott said.
