NORMAL -- Two Illinois State University students surrendered to Normal police Wednesday after a video depicting their alleged connection to weekend damage to the new Marriott Hotel and Conference Center was distributed throughout the campus.
The men, ages 19 and 21, were held on preliminary charges of criminal trespass to property and criminal damage to property over $300. Formal charges are pending by the McLean County State's Attorney's office. The Pantagraph does not name suspects until formal charges are filed in court.
Police and fire crews responded to the hotel for a fire alarm about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said several people had entered the hotel through an unlocked door and activated sprinkler systems was reported by police. The hotel does not open to guests until Oct. 30.
Police have not released a damage estimate.
Police Chief Kent Crutcher credited the university's cooperation with helping the investigation.
Illinois State University's student affairs division forwarded a police e-mail requesting the public's help in identifying the suspects. The mail included video footage from hotel cameras that was released to news media earlier this week.
The university decided an e-mail would help reach a broader group of students, said spokesman Jay Groves.
"If you knew them, you would be able to identify them," Crutcher said about the men shown on the video.
