SPRINGFIELD - Whether hunters and anglers soon have to pay more to indulge their hobbies is now up to Gov. Pat Quinn.
The Illinois Senate voted 41-15 Friday to raise fees on various hunting and fishing licenses. The legislation now goes to Quinn for final review.
Quinn first proposed raising fees earlier this year as a way to bolster the flagging Department of Natural Resources budget.
The legislation approved Friday would raise the cost of a fishing license from $12.50 to $14.50. A deer permit would go from $15 to $25, and hunting licenses would rise from $7 to $12.
DNR Director Marc Miller said meetings with hunters and fishing enthusiasts have revealed they mostly support the increases as long as the money is used to support conservations purposes.
"They know that the agency needs funding in order to rebuild itself," Miller said.
Republicans provided most of the "no" votes.
State Sen. John Sullivan, D-Rushville, argued some of the fees haven't been increased since the 1970s.
The fee increases, which would go into effect Jan. 1, 2010, are projected to bring DNR about $3.5 million more.
Quinn still would have to sign the legislation before it becomes law. The fee increases were his idea, but he has not officially committed to signing it.
"It's safe to say that he will fully review the bill if it arrives on his desk," spokeswoman Marlena Jentz said.
The legislation is Senate Bill 1846.
