MINONK -- The condition of a Minonk man injured Aug. 9 in an accident that killed a Rutland man with whom he was waking on Illinois 9 has been upgraded.

Gary L. Baker, 56, was listed in fair condition Sunday at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, a nursing supervisor said.

He and John Stevenson, 49, of Rutland were struck about 6 p.m. on the shoulder of Illinois 9 near Canton Airport Road, state police at Macomb said. Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The two had pulled over and parked their truck on the west shoulder because an item had fallen out of the truck bed.

Police said Kimberly Chaney, 37, of Lewiston was driving a van westbound and did not slow down, srtriking the back of a westbound SUV, then veering into the shoulder, hitting Baker and Stevenson and then their truck.

Chaney was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.
