MOUNT PULASKI - A 97-year-old Mount Pulaski man died Saturday after his car became caught in floodwaters, said Dan Fulscher, director of the Logan County Emergency Management Agency.
Cecil McCain was driving Saturday near the Lake Fort drainage ditch, a half-mile south of Illinois 54 and south of Mount Pulaski, when his car got caught in 5 to 6 feet of water, Fulscher said. He crawled out of his car and jumped on the roof to scream for help, and two young men in a car alerted their father by telephone, who called authorities at about 11:30 a.m., Fulscher said.
"He was still very active," Fulscher said. "He seemed like a very strong person. He seemed like he was in pretty good shape. I know 27-year-olds who couldn't have" climbed on top of a car during flooding.
Logan County EMA, Logan County dive team, Lincoln Fire Department, Cornland Fire Department and Mount Pulaski Fire Department responded to the scene and found McCain unconscious between his car and the road. Rescue personnel had to travel on 200 yards of flooded roadway to reach the man, Fulscher said.
McCain was taken by helicopter to Mercy Saint John's Hospital in Springfield, where he was pronounced dead.
Fulscher said although the road was not officially closed, there are permanent signs on the road that read, "Water on road."
Sangamon County Coroner Susan Boone has determined drowning as the cause of McCain's death.
"The only thing that can be reiterated is every time there's storms or flash flooding, the National Weather Service says over and over again, 'if there's water on the roadway, don't drive over it,'" Fulscher said.
Fulscher added that the county will see more flooding in the near future due to the cresting of Kickapoo Creek.
The weather service has issued a flood warning for Logan County through 12:30 p.m. today. A flood warning has also been issued for Sangamon County, which expires at midnight Tuesday, and one for McLean, Woodford and Tazewell counties, which expires at 2 p.m. today.
