NORMAL - A Downers Grove man wanted by the FBI in connection with in an alleged $11 million Ponzi scheme was in custody Monday after what appeared to be a failed suicide attempt in Normal, authorities said.

Normal police said they were called to a hotel in north Normal about 10:50 a.m. Monday by hotel management who were asked to check on the well-being of a hotel guest.

David Hernandez

David Hernandez, 48, was found with what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries, police said.

He was taken to a Twin City hospital, but police would not confirm which one. His medical condition was not available Monday night.

Normal Police Chief Kent Crutcher said once Hernandez is released from the hospital, he will be taken into federal custody.

A spokesman with the FBI in Chicago confirmed that, saying Hernandez would be returned to Chicago "at some point."

The 48-year-old Hernandez helped to launch Chicago Sports Webio, an Internet radio site featuring sports figures and reporters.

He was charged with mail fraud Wednesday after authorities said he cheated investors out of $11 million. Federal officials say Hernandez solicited investors over the Internet and misled them about investments he offered.

Ponzi scheme operators promise big returns but actually pay investors not out of money the venture has made but with money from other investors.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
