BLOOMINGTON -- Shelby made it through the weave poles and the remaining obstacles with her owner Bobby Scott, but the 5-year-old goldendoodle missed a teeter totter and had to go back.

"She usually does it but she didn't seem as focused," Scott said after the dog agility competition Saturday afternoon at the McLean County Fair at the Interstate Center, 2301 W. Market St.

Still, she won first place in the large dog intermediate class for Scott, 17, of Heyworth, a member of the County Capri 4-H Club. He will be taking Shelby to the Illinois State Fair to compete in the agility and obedience contests.

Scott and Shelby have competed in the agility contest for two years. His family picked up Shelby as a pet after doing some research on the goldendoodle breed, a poodle and golden retriever mix.

"She's very smart, very friendly and she does a lot of the things we like to do like swim and run," Scott said. "She wasn't supposed to shed, but I guess she didn't get the memo."

This year also was the second year for Elizabeth Coop and Audun to participate in the agility contest. Coop, 12, of Downs is a member of the Vision Riders 4-H Club.

Coop and Audun took third in the large dog intermediate class.

Coop started participating in the agility contest after her older sister, Nicki, 16, started competing.

"We spend every week through the summer practicing," Elizabeth Coop said.

The hardest part of the course for Audun is the weave poles, she added.

Fair organizers were able to hold all six classes in the dog agility contest despite Saturday's rain.

Although the rain appeared to keep attendance on Saturday a little low, the weather for the past week has helped draw bigger crowds than last year, said Mike Swartz, fair manager.

The fair does not keep a head count of attendance. Instead, Swartz judged attendance based on sales.

On Wednesday, the fair had 23 percent more carnival sales than the Wednesday of last year's fair week. Sales were up 30 percent on Thursday and 20 percent on Friday, comparing year to year.

"Weather is 50 percent of the fair's attendance," Swartz said. "These are some great numbers for us this year. We are just shocked and thrilled."

Sunday is the last day of the fair.
