BLOOMINGTON -- The principal and staff of Brigham Elementary will move to the new Cedar Ridge Elementary next fall, the school board decided Wednesday.

"We've been waiting," said Principal Geoff Schoonover, adding students are excited about the school, located just west of their current site in south Bloomington. "They can see the building going up."

Schoonover is meeting with Marlys Bennington, principal of the new Benjamin Elementary in east Bloomington, so furniture can be ordered for the sister schools.

Construction at Cedar Ridge should be complete by the end of April and Benjamin should be finished in May.

It's not so rosy at George L. Evans Junior High, located along U.S. Route 150, which is behind schedule because of weather. The three schools were built as part of a $96.7 million referendum approved in 2008.

Cedar Ridge construction was postponed 40 days because of weather, but workers made up for 25 of them, said project manager Richard Ach of Turner Construction.

Benjamin made up 25 of 48 weather-delay days. The junior high has made up only 15 of its 56 weather-delay days.

"An opening date for date for Evans likely won't be known until early December," said district spokeswoman Dayna Brown.

That would leave undecided the use of Brigham, which could become a temporary junior high until Evans is ready.

Brigham is expected to be used as the southern campus of the district's pre-kindergarten program; the rest of the pre-k students will be at Sugar Creek Elementary in Normal.

Students at Sugar Creek, which had an extension renovation, should be able to use the new library and gym in January.
