NORMAL -- Illinois State University planners want input from campus and community members as they plan the future of ISU facilities and property.

It has been nearly a decade since ISU Master Plan: 2000-2020 was laid out, so it's time for an update, said Dan Layzell, ISU vice president for finance and planning.

Many of the changes proposed in 2000 have been implemented as planned, he said. But in the 10 years since the plan's introduction, ISU finds itself in a changed economic climate and with different student demographics.

"This will be a starting point for future development," he said.

Next month, three public forums are planned to kick off the project. Each is expected to last 60 to 90 minutes. They will be:

-- 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Alumni Center, 1101 N. Main St.

-- 10 a.m. Nov. 18 at the Old Main Room, Bone Student Center.

-- 2 p.m. Nov. 19 at Ballroom B, Marriott Hotel, 201 Broadway.

"It's important to have broad input from the campus community and other stakeholders as early as possible in the process. ... It shouldn't be developed in a vacuum," said Layzell.

The plan covers academic buildings, student housing, athletic facilities, campus infrastructure and technology needs, he said.

Areas likely to be addressed include the planned demolition of south campus residence halls, development of certified private housing, and building proposals such as a new fine arts complex and Milner Library renovations.

He said the goal is to present drafts to the board of trustees throughout the year and to finalize the document by February 2011. A steering committee, made up of the four ISU vice presidents and the campuswide capital planning and budgeting team, oversees the project.
