BLOOMINGTON -- Two Illinois State University students were in court Thursday to face charges related to damage to the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in uptown Normal.

Patrick Smyth, 19, of Naperville and Andrew Pacholski, 21, of Palos Park each are charged with criminal damage to property over $300 and criminal trespass to a building.

The students were jailed in lieu of posting $300 in connection with water damage to the Normal hotel caused when a fire alarm was pulled during a weekend incident, according to the charges.

Police and fire crews responded to the hotel for a fire alarm about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said several people had entered the hotel through an unlocked door and activated sprinkler systems.

The hotel is expected to open to guests until Oct. 30, and officials have said the vandalism would not delay that.

Police have not released a damage estimate.
