Football, bonfires, parades and even an art fair will ring in this fall's college homecoming season in Central Illinois.
Eureka College in Woodford County and Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington each host homecoming activities this week, headlined with Saturday football games. Come Oct. 12, Illinois State University launches its "Spread the Red" festivities throughout Normal.
The IWU Titans play Millikin University's Big Blue at 1:30 p.m. on Wilder Field. Festivities start Thursday, when Titan alum and movie actor Kevin Dunn visits campus for a screening of his latest work, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." The 7 p.m. event is in the Hansen Student Center, 300 Beecher St.
A pep rally, stand-up comedy, and fireworks are planned Friday evening at Wilder Field. Saturday morning begins with a 5K walk at 9 a.m., with proceeds for a scholarship honoring IWU graduate U.S. Captain Ryan Beaupre. He was among the Iraq War's first casualties. Family activities follow. Also, the annual art fair is Saturday and Sunday on the quad.
Meanwhile, in Eureka, the private college plans a full week of "Time Warp"-themed events.
The Wednesday night torchlight parade ends with a bonfire at Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Among Thursday's events is a 9 p.m. pep rally in Reagan Center.
The parade steps off at 10 a.m. Saturday from downtown, heading to campus via College Avenue. An alumni hospitality tent with activities for children will open at noon at McKinzie Field.
At 1 p.m., the Red Devils face the Westminster College Blue Jays.
A free performance by steel drum band OD TAPO IMI and a barbecue dinner are planned from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Rinker Open Air Theatre. Lawn chairs are welcome. In case of rain, the event will be at the Cerf Center. Dinner costs $8 ($5 for children 4-12).
