BLOOMINGTON - A reference guide to more than 50 significant Lincoln sculptures in Illinois pays homage to six area artworks.
"Lincoln In Sculpture," by Carl Volkmann, is tied to the yearlong Lincoln bicentennial celebration.
Among area works detailed are two sculptures created by Twin Cities' artist Rick Harney: "Lincoln at Leisure," which is near the Livingston County Courthouse in Pontiac, and "The Lincoln Bench," located outside the
McLean County Museum of History in downtown Bloomington.
The compilation takes readers north from Freeport to Jonesboro in southern Illinois. Each section - originally published in Illinois Heritage magazine in a serial format - offers a brief history of the statue and its creator, and Volkmann provides GPS coordinates for each work.
Greg Koos, executive director of the McLean County history museum, said the handy guide fits nicely in a glove compartment.
"If you're driving around, particularly to see Lincoln sites, you could stop and learn something about a piece," he said.
Other Central Illinois statues in the guide include: Keith Knoblock's "Lincoln: The Circuit Lawyer," in the lobby of the McLean County Law and Justice Center in Bloomington; Robert Merrell Gage's "Lincoln the Student," on the campus of Lincoln College; "The President," a 1931 bronze statue in Mr. Lincoln's Square in Clinton; and "The Railsplitter Covered Wagon," a David Bentley fiberglass statue at Woodlawn and Old U.S. 66 in Lincoln.
The guide, published by the Illinois State Historical Society, retails at $10, and is available at the McLean County Museum of History bookstore, among other locations.
Copies also can be ordered directly from the state society in Springfield, at (217) 525-2781.
