BLOOMINGTON -- A 24-year-old Champaign man faces a Dec. 11 arraignment on charges of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his roommate following a Sept. 27 party in Normal.

A McLean County grand jury has indicted against Xavier Cordova, charging that he unintentionally and without lawful justification, killed Mitchell Robinson, 26, also of Champaign.

The indictment, returned Tuesday, states Cordova's actions were likely to cause death or great physical harm. Involuntary manslaughter is a Class 2 felony and carries a sentence of three to seven years.

Robinson's death was ruled a homicide Tuesday by McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling. Autopsy results indicated Robinson was brain dead as a result of strangulation, said a coroner's statement.  Factors related to toxicology did not contribute to the death, said Kimmerling.

Robinson, a student at Parkland Community College in Champaign, was found by friends in an apartment in the 400 block of Broadway just after midnight Sept. 27 and pronounced dead at BroMenn Regional Medical Center about an hour later.

Cordova turned himself in at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He posted $2,500 bond and was released from the McLean County Jail later that evening.
