CANTON -- A Minonk man was in serious condition Wednesday after an accident that killed a Rutland man with whom he was walking on Illinois 9 near Canton.

Gary L. Baker, 56, was at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, a nursing supervisor said Wednesday.

He and John Stevenson, 49, of Rutland were struck about 6 p.m. Sunday by a drunken driver on the shoulder of Illinois 9 near Canton Airport Road, state police at Macomb said. Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The two had pulled over and parked their truck on the west shoulder because an item had fallen out of the truck bed.

Thomas Hedden, 38, Canton, driving a westbound sport utility vehicle, slowed and moved toward the center while passing the pair. Behind Hedden's SUV was a van driven by Kimberly Chaney, 37, of Lewiston, police said.

She did not slow down and struck the back of Hedden's SUV, police said. She then veered into the shoulder and hit Baker and Stevenson and then hit their truck, police said.

Chaney, who had minor injuries, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.

Hedden and a passenger were not injured, police said.
