BLOOMINGTON — Fire destroyed a home on Bloomington’s eastern edge Monday afternoon, but no one was injured.

No one was home at the two-story farmhouse about half a mile east of the intersection of Towanda Barnes and Ireland Grove roads when the fire was reported about 4 p.m., firefighters said. Homer and Jeannie Bozarth own the home, where their son, Mike, lived alone.

Jeannie Bozarth, who lives nearby, said she called 911 after a passer-by saw the flames and stopped at her house to tell her.

“This house has been in our family since as long as I can remember,” Jeannie Bozarth said. “When I was dating Homer, his grandparents owned it and lived here.”

After dialing 911, she called Mike Bozarth, an employee of State Farm Insurance Cos., and another son, Matt, a firefighter with the Bloomington Fire Department.

“Matt was able to get some time off to come out, but there was not much he or anybody else could do,” she said.

The house was gutted, but a cause and estimate damage were not available Monday night.

One pet, a dog, was with Homer Bozarth at the time of the fire and was not injured.

Firefighters from Bloomington Township, Downs and Heyworth were at the scene.
