NORMAL -- People often think of philanthropists as those who give money to causes, but a local couple has been recognized for time and talents as well.

Carole and Jerry Ringer were named Philanthropists of the Year on Thursday during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation.

Philanthropy is about giving "money, effort, and leadership," said foundation executive director Myra Gordon, adding the Ringers exemplify that definition.

Jerry Ringer, president of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival Society, said the couple is involved in philanthropy because "it's a great community, and we want to keep it that way."

They are most passionate about the arts, education, and healthcare, said Carole Ringer, president of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.

Jerry Ringer has served nine, three-year terms on the Cornell College Board of Trustees. A retired ophthalmologist, he has taken trips to Africa to perform eye treatments and surgery.

His wife has been involved with several community organizations, including Girl Scouts, Medical Alliance, and Friends of the Arts.

Despite their service to the community, Carole Ringer was "stunned" to learn the couple won the award. "There are many others in the community that deserve the same recognition," she said.

The foundation holds $5.5 million in about 85 funds for individuals, scholarship funds, project funds, and partnership funds. In its last fiscal year, the foundation, which serves McLean, DeWitt, Livingston, and Logan counties, distributed more than $700,000 in gifts and grants.
