BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington man pleaded not guilty Friday to possession of child pornography, an offense he is accused of committing two months before he allegedly stabbed a woman more than 100 times in an unrelated homicide.

Kyle Brestan, 32, is accused of having pornographic images on his cellphone of a teenage girl he allegedly met through a 12-step support program the child attended with her father. The girl told authorities she stayed with Brestan during her spring break from March 24 to March 31 and he later took photos of her after she had consumed alcohol.

Brestan also faces murder charges in the brutal stabbing death of Shannon Hastings. The 27-year-old woman was found in the Econo Lodge on Brock Drive on the city's west side.

Evidence obtained from Hastings' phone has led police to conclude that she may have died several days earlier, according to prosecutors.

Police found the photos during their search of Brestan's phone during their questioning of him about Hastings' death.
