BLOOMINGTON — Circuit Judge Robert L. Freitag announced Monday he plans to retire from the bench on July 6.

Freitag, 57, was appointed associate judge in McLean County in 2000 and elected circuit judge in 2008. He previously was a prosecutor (1991 to 2000 in McLean County and 1990 to 1991 in Woodford County) and became McLean County's first full-time assistant public defender in 1989.

The Illinois State University and University of Illinois College of Law graduate entered private practice in 1987 and served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1996 until 2017, including a 2005-06 deployment to Iraq.

“My entire professional career has been dedicated to serving my community and my nation, and it has been an absolute privilege to do both," he said in a news release.

The Illinois Supreme Court may choose to appoint someone to complete his term until the 2020 election cycle.
