BLOOMINGTON — A man accused of stabbing a Peoria woman more than 100 times in a Bloomington hotel room pleaded not guilty Friday to murder.

Kyle Brestan, 32, of Bloomington, is charged with the brutal slaying of 27-year-old Shannon Hastings. The victim's body was found on May 21 in a room at the Econo Lodge on Brock Drive.

Authorities believe the woman may have died several days earlier, based upon surveillance videos obtained by police that allegedly show the suspect riding a bicycle in blood-stained pants after Hastings' cell phone stopped all activity around May 16. A store security camera captured Brestan and Hastings together on May 16.

Brestan was represented in court by defense attorney Stephanie Wong.

Relatives of the suspect and victim were in court for Brestan's arraignment. T-shirts bearing Hasting's picture and the slogan "Justice for Shannon" were worn by several people in the courtroom.

Assistant State's Attorney Brad Rigdon received materials in court Friday in response to a state subpoena for surveillance video from a business on West Market Street.

Brestan remains in jail on $5 million bond, meaning he must post $500,035 to be released.

A July 26 status hearing is scheduled.

Brestan also faces felony charges that was in possession of pornographic images of a 14-year-old girl.
