NORMAL — A team of middle school students from Evans Junior High School in Bloomington have won the local area MATHCOUNTS competition.
The top individual was Ved Kommalapati from Chiddix Junior High School, Normal.
Members of Evans' winning team are: Siddharth Bhumpelli, Tapaswini Kodavanti, Shreenija Daggavolu and Rohit Guha under the direction of coach Yu Ui-Jeen. The team will now advance to the state competition, to be held in Lisle on March 3.
The second-place team members from Bloomington Junior High School are: Hunter Basola, Elijah Lewis, Priya Joshi and Rujuta Durwas under the direction of coach Deborah Voorhees.
The third-place team members from Chiddix Junior High School are: Kommalapati, Adithya Sathyamurthy, Shrideep Gaddad and Claire Campbell under the direction of coach Betsy Myers.
In addition, the top two individuals, not already on a team advancing to the state competition, are Kommalapati and Basola. Both also will advance to the state competition.
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students.
Leadership at the local level of the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is provided by members of the Bloomington Area Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers.
