BLOOMINGTON — Four residents escaped an early Thursday morning fire that investigators said was caused by unattended food on a stove in an apartment building in the 1400 block of North Lee Street.

The Bloomington Fire Department was called to the scene at 2:42 a.m. Crews reported smoke showing from the second floor of the building and called in extra units, including the Normal Fire Department.

Residents were reported going in and out of the building before fire crews arrived, but no one was injured, said BFD.  Firefighters searched the other apartments and helped one resident of a lower apartment exit the building.

Firefighters found the fire on the second floor and reported the blaze was under control at 3:40 a.m.

Damage to the building was estimated at $15,000.

The Red Cross was notified and is helping the four residents.
