LASALLE — Two Democrats are vying to become LaSalle County's next treasurer.
Part-time Illinois Valley Community College and Aurora University instructor Kyle Fogle and financial planner "Nikki" Baer, both of LaSalle, are seeking the Democratic nomination in the March 20 primary.
The winner will face incumbent Jim Spelich, a Peru financial adviser who was the only Republican to file for the office he has held since 2014.
Fogle said recently a key goal for him is to ensure the county invests locally, adding that a large amount of money that is being invested outside of the county and state should be invested in local banks. He also said the county needs to cut back on spending and that he plans to donate a 6 percent pay increase for the treasurer's position to one student at Illinois Valley Community College.
Baer said she doesn't think the position of treasurer should be a part-time job and that she would give it full-time attention. She sees the county saving money and finding efficiencies through better communication among its departments and sharing resources, such as credit card processing. She also has questions about an item that she found in two different categories in the county's 2018 budget.
