100 years ago
July 19, 1909: Trash collection begins today in Normal. The contract went to Mr. C. Overton, who lives west of Normal. He'll be paid $60 per month. He will not pick up tin cans, ashes or dishwater, the story says.
75 years ago
July 19, 1934: Walgreen's downtown (where Elroy's is now) offers these deals and more at its sale: box cameras 39 cents to $3; folding chairs 88 cents each. Baseball gloves are as low as 77 cents and golf balls as low as 35 cents each.
50 years ago
July 19, 1959: Just for fun, Sylvester Fosdick and his son Sylvester Jr. will use old fashioned steam engines to thresh oats this month near Weston. The threshing bee will draw a crowd, with many coming to work and many more coming to watch.
25 years ago
July 19, 1984: Hong Quach is the very picture of a strong work ethic and love of freedom. A Vietnamese immigrant, he makes a living as a custodian at the Bloomington Public Library. (Quach eventually became a US citizen and retired from the library in the spring of 2009.)
