100 years ago
Oct. 5, 1909: Five Indian grave sites have been found about a mile from the Mackinaw River near Colfax. Three of them appear to have been disturbed by whites many years earlier. Bones from the other two graves will be brought here for study.
75 years ago
Oct. 5, 1934: Advertised in the Pantagraph: Wanita Skating Rink is the last word in amusement. The rink is open for skating 7-11 p.m. nightly except Sunday at 417 South Center Street. (The site is between Hermes Service and Sales and J&C Auto Service.)
50 years ago
Oct. 5, 1959: Thousands of people braved the foul weather Sunday for open house and dedication of the new BHS building. The speaker was Doctor Francis S. Chase of the University of Chicago.
25 years ago
Oct. 5, 1984: Rockford: the jury in the David Hendricks murder trial is now seated, composed of six men and six women. Their average age is 33. Hendricks, of Bloomington, is charged with murdering his wife and three children. Opening arguments are expected today.
