July 14, 1909: General James G. Harbord, McLean County native who is now president of RCA, wrote a series of articles on wartime communications for this paper. He predicted that television will be used extensively in the future, as radio was used in the (First) World War.

July 14, 1959: Fishing in a bad spot can bring bad luck. At Forrest, two unidentified boys were fishing below a railroad bridge when a passing Wabash freight train derailed. Two wheels from a boxcar narrowly missed the young fishermen when they rolled down the bank.

July 14, 1984: Tom and Pauline Fann have become designated drivers for a nest of sparrows. The birds are nesting in a pipe of their car and have hatched eggs there. Wherever the car goes, so do the sparrows.
