How Time Flies for Oct. 4, 2009:

Oct. 4, 1909: The football season began with Wesleyan in a 0-0 tie with Northwestern. ISNU lost to Wabash College 27-0. In high school ball, Bloomington defeated Decatur 11-5, and Normal beat Lincoln 77-0. (In modern times, none of these matchups exist.)

Oct. 4, 1934: Two guys used toy guns to try and hold up a Saybrook grocery store. But the owner noticed the gun pointed at him was a toy, so he brushed it aside and went for help. The would-be robbers were left standing there with masks and dark greasepaint on their faces.

Oct. 4, 1959: A bouncing blonde is bouncing bogus checks at Bloomington businesses. Not all the time, but every so often and for over a year. Shopkeepers are losing business when honest ladies stalk out of a store in anger, once they are asked to provide ID with a check.

Oct. 4, 1984: A protest against Normal's party law turned ugly, as police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of 1000 students. They had broken windows at the city hall, damaged a police car, and ignored Police Chief Dave Lehr's request that the crowd break up and go home.
