MINONK - Norman A. Young, 84, of Minonk, died at 3:51 a.m. Friday (Aug. 1, 2008) at OSF St. James Hospital, Pontiac.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Minonk. The Rev. Craig Swenson will officiate. Burial will follow at Minonk Township Cemetery, Minonk. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, Minonk, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Minonk, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

He was born May 22, 1924, at Flanagan, to Eugene and Tena Albers Young. His mother was killed in a car accident when Norman was 7 years old; he then was raised by his father and new wife, Esther Herron. He married Eilene Mortiz on April 23, 1950, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Minonk. She survives in Minonk.

Also surviving are two daughters, Norma (the late Roland) Carlson, Chicago, and Nancy (Ron) Wilsey, El Paso; one son, Don Young, El Paso; two grandsons, Rollo (Adriana) Carlson and Troy Carlson; and a sister-in-law, Madelon Young.

His brother and longtime business partner, Carl Young, preceded him in death.

Norman was a graduate of Minonk High School. After school he served in World War II from 1941 to 1945, part of that time on the European front as a private first class. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to be in business with his father and brother. He was in business at Young Chevrolet-Olds, Minonk, until the year 2000 with Carl; his son, Don; and nephew, Steve.

He will be remembered by his wife, son, daughters, grandchildren, new granddaughter, and many friends and relatives as the most patient and kind man in their lives. His spirit lit a room and his hugs were everlasting. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Minonk.
