BLOOMINGTON - Sharon W. Cornwell, 67, Bloomington, died at 5:02 p.m. Monday (June 29, 2009) at her residence.
Her service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Second Presbyterian Church, Bloomington. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery, Deer Creek. The Rev. Michael McGaughan will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution scholarship fund or Illinois Wesleyan University art or music departments.
She was born Dec. 1, 1941, in Peoria, daughter of Burton and Marjorie Nichols Whitmore. She married Bruce L. Cornwell on Sept. 1, 1963, at Pontiac.
Surviving are two daughters, Heather (Michael) Hibler, Danvers, and Shawna (Jim) Lake, Cary; six grandchildren, Kendall Lake, Garrett Jones, Davis Lake, Ashton Jones, Logan Hibler and Brooke Hibler; two sisters, Patricia (Jim) Adams, Sun City Center, Fla., and Sandra Leonard, Pontiac; and a brother, Wally Whitmore, Fremont, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Cornwell was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in 1963, with a teaching degree in art. She formerly taught kindergarten at Mackinaw, and later worked at Illinois State University in financial aid and purchasing for 25 years, retiring in December 2007.
She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Bloomington, where she formerly taught Sunday school for many years. She also was a former member of the Deer Creek Baptist Church, where she served as choir director. She was a member of the Letitia Green Stevenson Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; and she was an alum of Sigma Kappa, Eta Chapter, of Illinois Wesleyan University.
