Charlene F. Bennett, 95, of Gibson City, died 3:30 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2017) at Heritage Health, Gibson City.
Her celebration of life service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Gibson City. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Private burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery, Gibson City.
Charlene was born July 16, 1922, in Gibson City, a daughter of Oliver and Emma Gilmore Shirley. She married Leonard L. Bennett on Nov. 26, 1947, in Danville.
Surviving are her children, Bob (Barb) Bennett, Urbana; Wanda Driscoll, Greeley, Colo.; Carol (Jerry) Bennett-Barker, Peoria; Tom (Kathy) Bennett, Gibson City; and Doug (Sheila) Bennett, Gibson City; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Shirley.
Charlene was educated at the Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse; Drummer Township High School — valedictorian of the Class of 1940; and then received her teaching degree from Illinois State Normal University. She taught school at Wantwood Country Schoolhouse and at Busy Hands Nursery School for over 20 years.
She loved to play the piano and tend her garden at her family’s farm. She was an active member of First Christian Church of Gibson City, taught Sunday school and helped with the children’s choir for many years. She was a member of the Gibson Area Hospital Auxiliary. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest joy was time spent with her family.
