Sylvia Cooling, age 88, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Bloomington, passed away on Friday (Nov. 3, 2017) at Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 11, 2017) at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1617 E. Emerson St., Bloomington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Private inurnment will be in St. John’s Lutheran Church Columbarium, Bloomington.
The family suggests memorials be made to Faith In Action, Bloomington.
Arrangements are being handled by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.
Sylvia was born Sept. 11, 1929, in Peoria, the daughter of Raymond and Gertrude Schoenheider Steese. She married Rev. Robert Cooling on May 7, 1950, at Grace Lutheran Church, Peoria. He passed away in June 2001.
Surviving are her children, Christine (Allan) Simms, Dubuque, Iowa; Norman (Becky) Cooling, Canon City, Colo.; Claudia (Tom) Wood, Bettendorf, Iowa; grandchildren, Miriam Minzenmayer, Sheila Simms, Sarah Crespin, Hannah Cooling, Michal LeBaron, Brennan, Evan and Adam Wood; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Rev. Art (Audrey) Stees, Freeport; and nieces and nephews.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Benjamin Simms; and great-granddaughter, Abigail Minzenmayer.
Sylvia was a 1947 graduate of Peoria Central High School and she attended Carthage College for two years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomington where her husband, Rev. Robert Cooling, was a pastor. Sylvia was a piano teacher for over 40 years and was a church organist for five Lutheran churches. Sylvia was a kind and helpful person, with a quirky sense of humor.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
