BLOOMINGTON - The following are key developments in the case against former Bloomington Sgt. Jeff Pelo.
• June 11, 2006: Pelo is arrested and charged with the attempted burglary of a woman's home. He is placed on paid administrative leave from his position as sergeant with the Bloomington Police Department.
• June 13, 2006: Stalking charges are filed against Pelo related to the victim named in the attempted burglary case. He is released two days later after posting $30,000 bond.
• July 14, 2006: Pelo is charged with raping four women in separate incidents between December 2002 and January 2005. He must post $200,000 to be released on the new charges.
• Aug. 10, 2006: A McLean County grand jury returns a total of 35 indictments against Pelo, including 28 charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault related to the four rapes. A month later, Pelo's bond is reduced to $100,000.
• Feb. 5, 2007: Defense attorney Steve Skelton of Bloomington withdraws from Pelo's case, citing health reasons.
• Feb. 20, 2007: Springfield attorneys Jay Elmore and Michael Costello sign on to defend Pelo.
• May 3, 2007: Elmore and Costello leave Pelo's defense over financial issues. Chicago attorney Michael Rosenblat takes over several weeks later.
• Nov. 1, 2007: Bloomington city officials confirm Pelo's resignation from the department. Payment of Pelo's $81,000-a-year salary ends, and he receives a refund of his pension contributions.
• Nov. 19, 2007: McLean County Circuit Judge Robert Freitag rules Pelo's stalking and rape cases will be combined for a single trial.
• March 10, 2008: Freitag rejects defense arguments that Pelo's case must be moved outside McLean County because of prolonged media coverage. The trial is scheduled to begin April 4 with jury selection.
• March 19, 2008: Prosecutors and the defense agree the trial must be delayed to allow for DNA testing of a hair found on a pillow case during the 2005 assault. Freitag sets May 12 as the new trial date.
• June 11, 2008: Two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault were dismissed against Pelo by Associate Judge Robert Freitag. The counts related to a specific sexual act committed on one of the victims but numerous other charges remained involving the woman.
• June 18, 2008: A jury returns guilty verdicts on all 35 remaining counts against Pelo.
