PAXTON — A Ford County inmate recently sentenced to four years in prison for felony theft, has died of apparent natural causes in the jail.
In a statement released Wednesday morning, Sheriff Mark Doran, said Richard J. Gonzalez, 30, of Hoopeston, had been evaluated by medical staff, but did not indicate the reason.
“At this early stage of the investigation, he appears Gonzalez died of natural causes and no foul play is suspected at this time,” he said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Gonzalez was convicted in Ford County on Oct. 11 for using an ATM machine to make a fraudulent bank transaction, according to court records. He was in the process of appealing the conviction.
The Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Corrections are investigating the death.
