With the "Hair Today" campaign promotion unveiled by the latest Republican candidate for governor, it's no wonder people have trouble separating reality from spoof.
Give Andy McKenna credit for showing some creativity while throwing his hat into an already crowded ring of Republicans.
But we couldn't help noticing how much "Hair Today" resembled something we would expect to see on "Saturday Night Live" or "The Colbert Report" rather than on the campaign trail.
For those of you who haven't seen it, the first two minutes of the roughly six minute spot mock the hairstyle of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, while a serious-sounding narrator intones in a deep voice, "For far too long, Illinois has been ruled by the hair."
It includes photos of many people with Blagojevich-style wigs or hairstyles: men, women, children and babies. Even the State Capitol sports a Blago-esque hairdo on its dome.
Photos of Otto Kerner, Dan Walker and George Ryan - all former Illinois governors sent to federal prison - are shown with "the hair."
The underlying message is serious - that a "culture of corruption" continues in Illinois, that "scandal has become the norm" and "a thousand people have been convicted of political corruption" in the last 38 years. But will that serious message get lost?
Forgive the comparison, but it's somewhat like David Letterman trying to get serious about the scandal he brought upon himself while the studio audience kept laughing at what it thought were punch lines.
If McKenna's goal was to stand out from the crowd and attract more attention to his campaign, he at least partially succeeded: He got us to write an editorial about it.
