Tougher law needed on cars with loud stereos

Now that summer is here, we are once again tormented by these loud bass sound systems spewing out their profanity and racial slurs.

If they are actually caught by police, they are given a $75 ordinance violation citation. The problem is that many of them do not care about the citation because they do not pay it anyway.

Decatur had this same problem, but they put some teeth in their ordinance violation to stop the harassment. When caught in Decatur booming the loud bass stereo, it is a mandatory court appearance, a $250 fine for the vehicle operator, a $250 fine for the vehicle owner and the vehicle is towed at the owner's expense plus a one-day storage charge $80 if they pick it up the next day.

After having to paying out this much money, this usually stops their disrespect. If they are caught a second time for this offense, then their sound system is confiscated by police and not given back.

Decatur police do not give warnings because that might show favoritism.

Bloomington needs to adopt this same policy but it will take an outcry from the people - voters. Write or email a letter to your alderman on this. If you have an alderman that does not care, there is an alderman who does care and her name is Judy Sterns.

Why wait for this problem to get worse tomorrow when we can stop it today!
