Illinois State University/Illinois Wesleyan University Habitat for Humanity appreciates The Pantagraph's recognition of students' diverse volunteer efforts ("Habitat projects hammer home students' impact," OurViews, Sept. 8).
While we appreciate the attention, we want to acknowledge the important role that many facets of our community play in the success of collegiate volunteers.
Bloomington and Normal have donated building lots and provided other forms of assistance to support our chapter's efforts. Our respective universities value the service learning opportunities afforded by Habitat for Humanity and have provided excellent support. The staff of Habitat for Humanity of McLean County work tirelessly to provide opportunities for ISU and IWU students to construct.
Local businesses and organizations such as State Farm and the Bloomington Bar Owners Association have provided significant financial support. Local restaurants and grocery stores have provided us with snacks at building sites.
B-N residents support us in our annual Trick or Treat for Change event on Halloween. Last year we raised almost $13,000; this year the goal is $15,000. All money raised goes directly to defraying the costs of our 15th and 16th student-built houses.
The partnership among IWU, ISU, Habitat for Humanity of McLean County, Bloomington, Normal and local businesses and organizations is amazing.
ISU/IWU Habitat for Humanity remains one of the premier Collegiate Chapters in the nation. We simply could not have accomplished this without the assistance of so many elements of our local community.
Thank you for all the support of our volunteer efforts.
Joe DeLazzer, Normal
