Heartland Community College's empire building continues apace. Less than two years after taxing district homeowners $60 million, the board plans to levy $18 million more, despite an economic downturn and six new buildings plus athletic fields.
Voters were not consulted before, but this time you can attend a public hearing at 7 p.m. Dec. 9, Community Commons - first building on right - in Room 2012.
You might speak if you ask now, call (309) 268-8000 and ask for Laura in the executive office to be put on the agenda.
Homeowners need to know what they are paying for and have a right to disagree if there is a spending problem.
More than 8,000 citizens signed the petition for a voter referendum on the last bond issue. I hope many can make it to this hearing.
Going early to see the campus and sports facilities on Raab Road are worth a look. As you enter the campus and walk around in the buildings, notice the glass rotundas, mosaic terrazzo floors, grand staircases and hallways lined with original paintings and sculptures.
President Astroth has said: "Just because a student does not have the finances to go to a university, does not mean that they should have a second-rate education."
If you are unable to attend the hearing, send your opinion to Heartland board chairman Larry L. Littell, 767 Kickapoo Drive, Danvers IL 61732.
You could also mark your 2009 calendar with the names of the two incumbents up for re-election next April: Cindy Brand, Bloomington, and Christina Rogers, Normal.
If you are able to serve as a board member who would hold the line on taxes, thousands of property owners would support you.
The deadline for Heartland board candidates to file for the April election is Jan. 26.
