If you've had a psychology course, you've probably heard of the Maslow pyramid. Apparently, nobody in the Obama administration has.
If you are in sales, even if you are a bill collector, you have probably studied it and tried to use what you have learned. I sell for an health care collection agency, that is why my focus has been on health care reform.
Maslow says that there are five levels in the pyramid of human needs, the first being the most basic - food, water and air to breathe. The second includes our family, our jobs, security, etc. Only in the fourth and fifth levels are we secure enough to consider people other than those close to us.
How can those in charge in Washington, D.C., be surprised that so many are not ready to sign on to their health care plans. In times like these, we are too concerned about our basic needs.
Deal with the problems we already have - the economy, wars on two fronts and threats for more, a crumbling infrastructure - then work on health care, one step at a time.
Understand why we are concerned about your broad plans, don't call us reactionary. Our reaction to your plans was predicted by Maslow in 1943.
