Pierre De Coubertin revived the Olympics to be free of political intervention and help create a "new democracy, wise and peaceful internationalism, moral education and social peace." Hence , the Olympics is more than athletics, as evidenced by the Olympic Scientific Congress, Olympic Art Festivals and National Olympic Academies. And, Illinois State University has had its share of Olympians beyond athletes: delegates to the International Olympic Committee, hosting the National Olympic Academy, representative to the Scientific Congress, 19 student Olympians and a representative to the IOC, as well as athletes.
Although numerous heads of state were present at the recent IOC meeting, mainstream media said it best about our involvement. A TV commentator/analyst stated that Michelle Obama was so impressive that the IOC "would surely name Chicago as the next Olympic site. Rio de Janeiro has too much crime" - as if Chicago doesn't. Obama stated, "It would be nice to have the opening ceremony near my house." The analyst also said the presence of Oprah is a major influencing factor.
French President Sarkozy stated it best, "President Obama , I support the Americans' outstretched hand but what did the international community gain from these offers of dialogue? Nothing."
These comments certainly reflect that a committee can do its job without undo influence, and it awarded the games to a country that has never had the games. Congratulations IOC.
