Budget cuts will affect everyone

It is increasingly evident that Illinois has embarked on a crisis for its human service field.

In recent months, there has been heavy debate on both ends of the spectrum, whether to raise taxes to "fix" this problem.

In a time where families are carefully spending every penny, it may be hard for some to imagine yet another expense, and thus, they are not on board for tax increases. However, having been in this field for 10 years and working at a local substance abuse agency, I don't think that everyone understands the devastation that such a reduction in funding will mean not only to the state but our local community.

This potential doomsday budget goes beyond my passion to see the underrepresented or overlooked individuals of my community given an opportunity at change, growth and productive citizenship.

If the day of reckoning occurs, it affects every family who is utilizing public school services from preschool to university level and every person who needs healthcare assistance. It affects the child welfare system, mental health services and substance abuse programs.

It is not that I want you to "pay" for my salary or be your "brother's keeper." I want you to protect services for your family. A vote for a fair income tax increase will protect these vital services, including for you.
