Halvorson visits here more than predecessor

The Sept. 12 front page story was about the 9/11 commemoration at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, bemoaning the low attendance at the event ("Area gathers to mark Sept. 11 attacks anniversary").

One prominent individual present that The Pantagraph failed to mention was Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson, who was there for the veterans' job fair opening ceremony at 11 a.m. As a member of the House Veterans' Committee, she demonstrates a deep interest in the well-being of our military men and women.

A recent letter claimed that Halvorson wouldn't know how to find McLean County ("Health systems need sensible reforms," Aug. 30). Since January, she has been to McLean County 11 times, including over 50 visits with local organizations and individuals: farm groups, educators, local business and government leaders, labor, veterans' and social service organizations and concerned individuals. I challenge anyone to find an equal number of visits during any similar time period by her predecessor in office.

Besides in-person visits, Debbie also held a "call-in town hall meeting," which allowed people throughout the district, including the homebound and those unable to attend night meetings, to participate. She stayed online past the appointed hour to insure questions were heard.

We expect much from our federal representatives, as we should. Despite all the negativity that makes the news, most work long hours and then give their weekends and time off to meet with constituents. Although McLean County is the farthest from her home and her district's edge, Congresswoman Halvorson takes the time to come, to seek opinions and listen, and she deserves our thanks.
