U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood claims to act in the interests of constituents. He offers words that sound as though he has an interest in us. This is common of elected officials driven by partisan politics and party loyalty.
This makes LaHood's compassion and concern hard to detect. I ask him about his compassion for folks, regarding healthcare and those who'll be severely affected under the proposed AHCA; he quickly responds "We can agree to disagree." I've heard that on many occasions. A switch flips when he detects certain topics: autopilot.
Regarding Trump and Russia and today's news headlines, all I hear from LaHood is more party-line responses, statements that assure constituents he's not swaying from the base that elected him, as well as non-committal statements. He refuses to commit or take a position due to the fallout such statements may lead to or the pressure such statements put upon him to follow-up on commitments. These are natural behaviors for career politicians.
We must ask the congressman, however, if this is how he wants to be remembered during this defining time period in our history. He and so many others, regardless of party affiliation, continue to take the easy road, the safe road. Representative LaHood, do you really believe this is what your constituents and the entire citizenry of this country are asking from you? How can you not hear the concern, the fear, the anxiety, in our voices and not respond to it, not act on it?
